Rome Burns featured in Rock Legend [May. 29th, 2007|08:48 am]
There's a new PC game out called Rock Legend, a turn based rock band simulator:

Do you want to be a Rock Star? Then this new game from the makers of Kudos and Democracy is just for you... The game is part RPG, part life-sim, part Tycoon game. You are a struggling rock singer who puts together their own band, and tries to achieve fame and fortune, from humble beginnings as a starving garage-band. Pick your band-members, choose the band name, write the songs...play the gigs...

Rome Burns have been included in the list of bands and songs used within the game. Now - if only they release "Goth Legend"...

Sheffield Gig Cancellation [Mar. 20th, 2007|10:42 am]
It looks likely that the gig at the Casbah, supporting Devilish Presely on 19th April 2007, will be cancelled.

The promoter has pulled out due to low attendance at previous gigs making it financially difficult. Devilish Presely are in talks with the venue to keep the gig going ahead, but if it does there's no guarantee that we will still be invited to support.

Stay tuned for updates...

Latest News [Sep. 25th, 2006|09:09 am]
The band are working on the new album (some songs are great and some are weird and some are weird and great!) and playing to crowds at various places (see the website's gig pages), but occasionally individual members of the band are allowed out to play without adult supervision.

Tori, the beautiful 'burns bassist will be helping out at Screaming Banshee Aircrew gigs whilst they are juggling their line-up. Make sure you say hello if you're at an SBA gig.

Meanwhile, Simon's debut novel has just been published by Immanion press (http://www.immanion-press.com) ISBN:190485334X. Go and buy a copy. It's like an extended Rome Burns' lyric sheet, full of amusing musings about the world.

Gig Review Sat 28th May 2006 [Jul. 24th, 2006|08:43 am]
BLACKMACHINE (THE PORTMAN HOTEL) BOURNEMOUTH WITH THE SCREAMING BANSHEE AIRCREW, 28TH MAY 2006

The Cast:
Simon Satori: Vocals and General Confusion
Daevid: Guitars and Sly Allusions
Nevla: More Guitars and Strange Delusions
Tori: Bass & Newcastle Brown Infusion
Gregor: Drum-Synth Fusion

Review by Lisa Noel.

That was fun. The Portland Hotel has a nice clean and welcoming bar and restaurant and a dingy amp-smelling music venue attached to one side, like a good middle-class family holding onto the arm of an errant son with four asbos and a cocktail of alco-pops and ecstasy tablets. The venue was mostly decorated with a random smattering of records in glass cases nailed to the walls, everything from Strawberry Switchblade to Perry Como, everything that was in Oxfam's bargain bin at the time the room was decorated.

The DJs were playing a fine blend of obscure and well-known alternative music but most people chose to spend as much time as possible in the posh bar rather than the sweaty venue. Thus Rome Burns took to the stage to the surprise of many of the milling masses. Uncle Satori further helped with the confusion when he announced with wry smile that "We are Screaming Banshee Aircrew" but whoever the mystery band were, as they played, more and more people started to brave the sweaty venue. The band played all the old favourites from Non-Specific Ghost Story and a few new ones as well (which the band claimed were written only that morning!) The new stuff is sounding very promising. There's a song called "Rebecca Eureka" that is at its heart a simple rock song but which has something very anthemic about it that makes it stick in your head
like a neurologist's brain-tap. After playing it Simon claimed "We are Lordi. Thank you for listening to our Eurovision entry!".

Daevid was fantastic as the second vocalist on "Seeking Mr. Hyde" and "Your Woman" especially when Simon's voice was starting to suffer with the heat. Nevla was a rock-monster. Certain parts of certain songs seemed to involve one of Gregor's lights flashing on and a short electronic message is fed to the other side of the stage to switch on a button marked 'Nev-rocks-like-a-muppet-on-amphetamines'. Tori, official 'birthday girl' of the evening, also appeared to be enjoying herself fluctuating between some mesmerising fretboard dances (eg Blue Boy) to the more controlled rumblings of the rhythm department.

At one point Satori (not usually known for his use of profanities) found it hard not to comment on the strange notice written in cut-out paper letters beside the stage: "Hi we're WET TITS" he said and then added "Actually, I don't know if that's a band name or an instruction".

By the time the band were announced correctly as "Rome Burns" it was time for Screaming Banshee Aircrew to take the stage. SBA have a number of fine attributes: dedication, professionalism, energy, their own nuclear capability etc. etc. but when on stage unencumbered but instruments, embarrassment or gravity Mr. Ed is an attribute in himself. He's here. He's there. He's everywhere. He's in the crowd or on a stair. He's playing Jesus in his underwear. (I read a lot of Dr. Seuss as a kid. Does it show?)

Even Mr. Ed however had to work extra hard to keep the crowd from periodically running for the cooler environment of the bar next door. With a set-list filled with familiar crowd-pleasers, Nick and Xris (a shockingly good third vox for the band) rocking like there's no tomorrow and Jo crooning to Ed, to the crowd and to her violin, they metaphorically bolted the doors and even held the audience's attention through the new songs (everybody has new songs, where are mine!?). These seem to be developing SBA into broader territories whilst still keeping within spitting distance of the fast paced goth-punk that is SBA's traditional stomping ground. At the end they dragged Simon and Tori up onto stage for an encore with SBA's big finale sea-shanty.

Once the bands had finished, the DJs returned to provide a soundtrack for the hot sweaty beery night of fun. I mention the heat again if only to explain why at this stage of the evening one of those framed 'classic' albums spontaneously exploded from the wall.

It was a bit of a shock, which may explain why, only now, whilst I'm typing this does the full spooky significance of the incident emerge. Banshee Aircrew had just played and the broken bits of glass and vinyl came from a record by a 1940's Hollywood comedian called Jerry Colonna. The record was called "Music For Screaming".

The band would like to thank THE PROMOTERS for being fantastic (all contracts should include bacon butties in the future!)

This month:

  • Simon Satori Hendley's interests currently include: Current 93's new album, the Xmen, Anthony Burgess's Enderby series and Dr. Who (which he sneakily watched whilst everyone else was setting up the sound!)
  • Daevid Jael is currently interested in: Kronenburg Blanc and cheaper forms of transport ;)
  • Nevla is interested in: Blue Vodka
  • Tori Pink is interested in: Clip on hair
  • Gregor Samsa recommends: Free sample CDs and VSTis as talking companions...

April 2006 [Apr. 11th, 2006|10:20 am]
It's been a little while since the last update, but don't worry - we're all alive and well!
Mixing on the demo has been a slow process, but we hope to have the new songs done soon.

In the meantime we're continuing to write more material (2 new embryonic songs emerged in the last week alone) and are setting up some more live dates for the year.

Feel free to head into the Chat Forum and post some messages...

New songs... [Jan. 12th, 2006|09:08 am]
Firstly, Rome Burns would like to wish all their fans a Happy New Year!
A bit late i know, but we've been busy...

As well as some small website updates (checks out a few new studio photographs on the "Official Photos" page) the band have been busy writing new material for the next album. Last week 2 new songs were give a thorough beating and everyone is really happy with the way they've turned out.
A couple more are waiting in the wings, and that combined with the 3 or 4 that were already written means that soon Rome Burns will be looking at booking some studio time to get something recorded.

No gigs have yet been confirmed for 2006, but rest assured the guys (and gal) will be returning to a town near you soon...

The Last Dance Tour review (London & Colchester, November 2005) [Nov. 29th, 2005|02:58 pm]

Guitars: Daevid "Pinstriped & Primed" Jael

Review by Lisa Noel

Rome Burns had found themselves supporting Last Dance for half of their UK tour and more importantly for the first and last gigs. So I was delighted to be able to see RB and some of the best goth bands from across the pond twice in one week.

The London venue was a surreal top-floor coffee bar, 200 feet above Leicester Square. It was called the Marquee but it looked more like a better-lit version of the bar at the beginning of Star Wars. The musicians were beautiful and intelligent and the audience were appreciative.

It has to be said that there was "a lot of love in the room" as aging hippies might say. The Insanitorium crowd (who are Last Dance's roadies, guides, trouble-shooters and interpreters for their stay in the U.K.) were humorous and helpful in equal measures. DJ Psyche who had said that this would be the last gig she ever arranges was almost regretting that decision having both "not-lost-money" and had a lot of fun (I'm so glad RB got to do one of her gigs, especially as Uncle Nemesis was there and I always think RB were unlucky not to do a Nemesis gig before he retired!).

Rome Burns were on first and as always blurred the line between being joyously amateur and perfectly professional. How they can keep putting on such great shows without the benefit of a decent soundcheck continues to shock me. I suppose credit should be split between the band (who are used to performing under pressure) and the sound engineer who through luck or talent managed to coax a really nice sound from all three bands.

The band rattled through a collection of tracks from the Non-Specific Ghost Story album, with the odd cover and older song thrown in for variety. They seemed fairly relaxed and the only time when Simon (kitted out in his "Mexican pimp" hat) dropped a beat was when one of those sneaky Insanitoriumites held up a sign saying how "Rome Burns rock" and how "the guest singer 'Zorro' was really good!"

People must hate it when they create beautiful music and all a reviewer talks about is the funny shape of their guitar but still it has to be mentioned: Eva O had a fantastic guitar. It was the shape of a chubby cherub. Meanwhile Rome Burns (some of whom obsess about stringed instruments in ways that cannot be healthy!) were exhibiting two new guitars themselves ("Tinky" the Bass and "Giger" the guitar if you were interested!)

Eva O (and her guns) had a more avant-garde approach to Goth music, playing a set of songs that nowadays would be described as "Death Rock" with occasional theatrical poetry piece thrown in to hold the audiences attention. She kept us old folk entertained with occasional trips back into her past for Christian Death and Shadowplay songs but all of it held together like one complete story in the dark punk fairy-tale world of Eva.

The final band of the night were Last Dance who really deserve their headlining slot. They are serious without being po-faced and romantic without being clichéd. I was afraid that the real drums might force the sound into rockier territories and away from the synth and guitar-washed goth that fills their CDs. Luckily this was not the case and they've found themselves a drummer who is sympathetic with their sound and talented enough to work within the confines of pre-programmed synths and effects.

Colchester was the finale of the Last Dance Road Show. This time the venue was a scout hut (I'm not kidding!) and this time the sandwich filling between Rome Burns and Last Dance was provided by the non-stop rock-and-roll cabaret called Devilish Presley.

The venue must be taken as another example of the idiosyncratic nature of the Insanitorium crew. Officially it was called "The Bunting Rooms" but no matter how many "Scout Pledges" they covered up, everyone knew it's original use. It had no bar (which actually made it a good cheap night as we all brought our own alcohol), strange posters about "Beaver skills" on the walls (Beavers are apparently young scouts!) and a large picture of the queen staring down at the audience. But who cares what the building looks like so long as the people come and have fun, which they did. Jeff (Last Dance) said they were the most beautiful audience of the tour (creep!).

I don't think this was Rome Burns' best gig but looking round at the audience I realised that my standards may be unrealistically high, because some of the crowd were going wild! There was singing, there was dancing and there was even a little moshing going on. The band had left their rockier numbers for the end ("Blue Boy" and "War of the Pygmies") so it was amusing to watch Nevla become more and more gibbon-like as the set went on. This doesn't sound like a complement, but it is! honestly: when the music gets to him he becomes hairier, more hunched and with limbs swinging rapidly across guitar strings like liana vines.

Of course details like this are mere distractions from the great music but no one ever said that journalism was immune from gossip and frivolity. Daevid had changed hairstyles again since Wednesday in an attempt to match Madonna or Bowie's famous chameleon qualities. He is looking younger and younger each time I see him and more like the "Indie-kid" that he probably is (somewhere in his attic is a portrait of a very old goth probably Satori!). Tori however stole the show for many of the Y chromosomed audience. To promote Insanitorium and "the best legs on stage" she bought a pair of Insanitorium pants (or "panties" for the Americans in the audience, or indeed in the bands) and wore them with pride, style and a pair of fishnet tights.

I'm always amazed by Devilish Presley. During sound-checks and whilst testing microphones Jacqui's voice sounds like an awkward squawk. However, add some drums, bass, guitars and an attitude and something amazing happens. It emerges into the aggressively sexy growl of a street-racing Cadillac with flames painted round the wheel-rims and fluffy-skulls hanging from the mirror. Although the vocal duties are split between Johnny and Jacqui I'm sure she was doing more of the work this time. If that is true, Johnny makes up for it between songs however by preaching the holy word of Devilish Presley to everyone who will listen (and who would dare not to!). I next get to see them in Cambridge for another Rome Burns gig and I'm really looking forward to it. They're one of the hardest working bands in Britain so you never know which songs they're going to play or how many new albums they'll have out since you last saw them.

And finally there was Last Dance: their final gig of a long week in the UK stuck in a van with Martin Oldgoth and the assorted madfolk of Insanitorium (the poor souls!). To be honest, they seemed to be talking more than they were playing, but no one seemed to care. They were so happy to be there, to be playing in front of an adoring audience, with friends, with end-of-tour elation, and with Tori's pants on!

They played tracks from the old albums and tracks for the new album which is so good that every copy they took to England has been sold out (I'm glad I picked my copy up in London!) I can't wait till they come back to this country... I may even have to go to the states to stalk them in their home territory.

This Month:

  • Simon Satori Hendley recommends: Whiskey & Bananas, the new Last Dance album, and a nice smart Sombrero Cordoba.
  • Daevid Jael recommends: The new Apoptygma Bezerk Album, Pink Star Ties, Not driving in London during rush hour especially on Shaftesbury Avenue and round Leicester Square...
  • Nevla recommends: H R Giger, Wychwood ales, the new Last Dance album, funky gibbons and having a set of jump-leads in your car.
  • Tori Pink recommends: Noodles, Vurt and starting a full on Bass guitar romance
  • Gregor Samsa recommends: a virtual diet.

Basingstoke Gig Review, 22nd October 2005 [Nov. 2nd, 2005|10:19 pm]
THE WAY OF ALL FLESH & ROME BURNS at DR FELLS - BASINGSTOKE, 22ND OCTOBER 2005

By Lisa Noel

Just because this is a review of a gig doesn't mean I shall talk about music. There was plenty of great music that night. I will however talk about people. There were plenty of great people there that night too, from the punters who came and punted, to the bar staff, DJs, team of cobweb arrangers and others too numerous to enumerate. However here is a quick biography of the more egotistical.

The Promoter: Mr Big...

  • Paul Sticks is literally "fun on a stick". He smiles and jokes through the challenges of life and manages to DJ, promote alternative music nights and rule his own private universe with few ill effects. His crutches have no ambulation value. The right one is a hollowed out elephant gun and the left contains a long thin drinking vessel; currently filled with Absinthe shandy. He is the sort of promoter who asks his bands to sing rude songs about bestiality.

The Way of All Flesh:

  • Dave is a rich caramel centre surrounded by crispy nuts.

  • Kate plays bass, DJs, sorts out the sound levels for TWOAF and Rome Burns and performs a myriad of other tasks for the U.N. and their alien masters. Multi-talented she is saving up for the extra limbs she once saw in a popular Super-Hero movie.

  • Steve has never appeared before a magistrate. Which is strange when you think about it!

  • Kelly was once confused with Pliny The Elder at a bus stop. Kelly's philosophic debate is admittedly rusty but he is younger than Pliny by several centuries and Pliny was lousy on the electric guitar.

Their majesties, Rome Burns:

  • The callow Mr Nevla possesses ten extenuated fingers that prance along his six-string instrument like a small horde of twiglets moshing upon telegraph wires. Were he just to possess two more digits he would truly be "The Freak of the Fens" that he has set his heart upon. Simon Satori Hendley (pimp) has remortgaged Nevla's soul seven times: to Barclays Bank, Alice Cooper, Beelzebub, The Great God Pan, The Great God Ibanez and twice to the Marquis of Bath.

  • Daevid "Steely Eyes" Jael dunks his soldiers in the blood of angels. This may or may not be for artistic reasons, but it does keep the swarms of cherubim from the litterbins. He controls the drum machine "Gregor Samsa" with an iron fist but plays his guitar with vim, glee, whiz and pow.

  • The blithesome Toripink plays herself in all future appearances and a mean bass guitar. Be-corsetted and tied into her best balancing-boots she runs safaris across the great Cambridgeshire veldt. She is no stranger to kitten wrangling. She is happiest when blue clouds of hop-and-oat fumes blow across the landscape like alcoholic wilderbeeste.

  • Simon Satori Hendley (a human) plays harp-like with his taut vocal chords and a small metal device that goes "ting". He knows songs both reposeful and ribald. He is often found standing next to musicians in the hope that the myopic might mistake his talents. He wanders through life solving other people's problems... like "The Littlest Hobo" only with less fur. His motto "There is little in the world that cannot be solved by a nice cup of tea and a gunpowder enema" has brought a small glimmer of sense into our dark and foreboding lives. He suffers fools gladly, the consequences, but never in silence.

My name's Lisa Noel. I occasionally write journalistic diatribes about various bands. This is my dog "Freeway"!
